Classic LasagnaIngredients:
For the Lasagna Noodles:
3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 3 large eggs 1/2 cup milk 1/4 cup olive oilFor the Meat Sauce:
1 pound ground beef 1 pound Italian sausage 1 onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce 1 (15 ounce) can tomato paste 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon dried basil 1/2 teaspoon sugar Salt and black pepper to tasteFor the Bechamel Sauce:
4 tablespoons unsalted butter 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour 4 cups milk 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg Salt and black pepper to tasteFor the Filling:
1 pound ricotta cheese 1 egg, beaten 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsleyInstructions:
To Make the Lasagna Noodles:
1.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, eggs, milk, and olive oil.
2.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
3.
Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let it rest at room temperature for at least 30 minutes.
To Make the Meat Sauce:
1.
In a large skillet, brown the ground beef and Italian sausage over medium heat.
2.
Add the onion and garlic and cook until softened.
3.
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, oregano, basil, sugar, salt, and black pepper.
4.
Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until thickened.
To Make the Bechamel Sauce:
1.
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
2.
Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
3.
Gradually whisk in the milk until the sauce is smooth.
4.
Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until thickened.
5.
Stir in the nutmeg, salt, and black pepper.
To Assemble the Lasagna:
1.
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
2.
Divide the lasagna dough into 12 equal pieces.
3.
Roll each piece of dough into a thin sheet.
4.
Spread 1/3 of the meat sauce over the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
5.
Top with 4 lasagna noodles.
6.
Spread 1/2 of the ricotta cheese mixture over the noodles.
7.
Sprinkle with 1/2 of the Parmesan cheese.
8.
Repeat layers.
9.
Top with remaining 4 lasagna noodles and the remaining meat sauce.
10.
Spread the remaining ricotta cheese mixture over the sauce.
11.
Sprinkle with the remaining Parmesan cheese.
To Bake:
1.
Bake the lasagna for 30-35 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
2.
Let the lasagna rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Tips:
For a richer flavor, use a blend of ground beef and pork sausage.
Add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the meat sauce for a little heat.
If you don’t have time to make your own lasagna noodles, you can use no-boil lasagna noodles instead.
You can also add other ingredients to the filling, such as spinach, mushrooms, or zucchini.
