The “Girls United for Goals” program, spearheaded by the Karachi Women’s Sports Foundation (KWSF), is harnessing the spirit of sport to drive social change.
Field hockey has a rich history in Pakistan, but it has traditionally been dominated by men.
The KWSF recognized this gender disparity and set out to create a platform where girls could participate in the sport on an equal footing.
Launched in 2015, the program has since reached over 1,000 girls from underprivileged communities.
Through weekly training sessions and competitive matches, these girls are not only developing their athletic abilities but also acquiring essential life skills.
Sportsmanship, teamwork, and perseverance are integral to field hockey, and the program instills these values in its participants.
“Field hockey has taught me how to work together as a team,” says 14-year-old Rida Gul.
“I’ve learned the importance of discipline and respecting my opponents.
“The program also emphasizes education, with participants receiving support with their studies.
“I never used to be interested in school,” admits 16-year-old Ayesha Suleman.
“But now I realize that staying in school is crucial for my future.
Field hockey has given me the motivation to study harder.
“Beyond the playing field, the program has also forged partnerships with local organizations to provide vocational training to young women.
“We want to ensure that our participants have the tools they need to be self-sufficient,” explains KWSF founder Sarah Khan.
“Sports can open doors for them, but we need to provide them with opportunities to build a better future.
“The “Girls United for Goals” program has not only empowered individual girls but has also had a broader impact on society.
By challenging gender norms and providing a positive role model for young women, the program is shifting perceptions about what girls can achieve.
“When I see my daughter playing field hockey, I feel so proud,” says Saira Bibi, Rida’s mother.
“It gives me hope that she will have a future filled with possibilities.
“As Pakistan grapples with social challenges such as gender inequality and poverty, the “Girls United for Goals” program stands as a beacon of hope.
Through the transformative power of sport, it is empowering young girls to break barriers, reach their full potential, and contribute to a more just and equitable society.
