Carpaneda’s potential became evident in 1960 when she set a world record in the 60-meter wheelchair race.
Four years later, she made history at the Tokyo Paralympics, becoming the first Italian woman to win a gold medal in an individual event.
She triumphed in the shot put, setting a Paralympic record that would stand for over 20 years.
Her success continued at subsequent Paralympic Games.
In Seoul 1988, she earned a silver medal in the 200-meter wheelchair race and a bronze in the shot put.
At Barcelona 1992, she added another silver in the 200-meter race.
Beyond her athletic achievements, Carpaneda became an advocate for Paralympic sport and the rights of disabled people.
She served as president of the Italian Paralympic Committee for over two decades and played a crucial role in the growth of the Paralympic movement worldwide.
Carpaneda’s legacy extends far beyond the medals she won.
